In Response to the Killing of its Soldiers in Kadugli, Bangladesh Labels the RSF a “Terrorist Group.”

The Bangladeshi government has designated the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) a “terrorist group,” becoming the first country to explicitly use this designation.

In a statement published on its official Facebook page on Saturday, the Bangladeshi army commented on the killing of several of its soldiers in Sudan, following an attack launched by the RSF militia using drones in Kordofan. The statement indicated that these soldiers were killed in a “terrorist attack on a UN compound” while serving with the peacekeeping force in the Abyei region of Sudan.

The statement added that, according to the latest figures, six soldiers were killed and eight others were wounded, suggesting the possibility of further fatalities among the injured.

The Bangladeshi soldiers killed were part of the peacekeeping force known as UNISFA, the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei, which has been deployed in the region since 2011. The UN initially deployed Ethiopian troops, but the Abyei mission expanded after 2022 to include forces from other countries.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack on the UN mission’s sub-committee headquarters, carried out by the Rapid Support Forces militia two days ago, and deemed it a war crime under international law.
