IGAD Warns of Risky Migration

Nairobi – Sudanhorizon

Representatives of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) member states participated in the Third Ministerial Conference on Labor, Employment, and Labor Migration, attended by relevant ministers and leaders of relevant sectors.

In his address at the conference, IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu has noted that millions of citizens from the region annually seek employment opportunities in the Gulf, the Middle East, and elsewhere. However, the lack of safe alternatives forces many to risk dangerous migration routes, including the Red Sea, which has claimed the lives of more than 3,400 people over the past decade.

Gbeyehu emphasized that IGAD has a responsibility to ensure fair working conditions for migrant workers and to work to create local job opportunities that enable the people of the region to achieve prosperity in their homelands.

He emphasized the Authority’s commitment to promoting safe, orderly, and dignified labor mobility within and outside the region, within the framework of a comprehensive development vision.
