Cairo – Sudanhorizon – Sabah Musa

Dr. Kamal Abdel Aziz, a prominent leader in the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdul Wahid Nur, has urged local parties, all regional, and international organizations to help provide assistance to the calamity-stricken people of Tarsain village in Jebel Marra region of Darfur.

Abdel Aziz told Sudanhorizon news website that “We stand ready to cooperate with all so as to alleviate the suffering of our people in the region.”

He emphasized that the disaster beyond the capabilities of the warring parties, adding, “It is true that our position is neutral in this war, but this is a humanitarian disaster, and the government in Port Sudan bears responsibility for the loss of its citizens, as so does the Rapid Support Forces.”

He continued, “We need everyone’s help to save our people in the region.”

The leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement explained that other areas in the region are threatened with collapse, and that the disaster was still ongoing, and everyone must help those affected.

He pointed out that the village of Tarsain is one of the villages located under the shadow of the Jebal Marra mountain. He said that when heavy rains hit the area, as such was the case long time ago, parts of the mountain sometimes fall on them. He added that this disaster has occurred in the region before, but this time it was much greater.

In the meantime, Adam Rijal, the official spokesman for the IDPs in Darfur, explained that the rains are still pouring in the region and have not stopped. Rijal told Sudanhorizon that they lacked sufficient information about the full scope of the calamity as the area is difficult to access at this time of the year adding, “I am in the village of Nertiti, which is about a 12-hour walk from Tarsain.”

He explained that the roads are rough and difficult for vehicles to move through. The official spokesperson for the displaced in Darfur stated that humanitarian aid and rescue teams can enter via Nyala to Fina, and then using animals, proceed and reach the location in five hours. He pointed out that this huge challenge can be met with solidarity by everyone to combat this disaster and save people.

He argued that this disaster can unite the conscience of the Sudanese people, adding that coordination must be made with all parties to allow the entry of aid and rescue teams.

More than a thousand people were killed in a massive landslide that destroyed the entire village in the Darfur region in the west of the country. The incident was described as one of the worst natural disasters in Sudan’s modern history, according to a statement announced Tuesday by the Sudan Liberation Army Movement led by Abdul Wahid al-Nur, which controls the region.
