Machar’s Movement Warns of Repercussions of Kiir’s Unilateral Decisions

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO), led by Dr. Riek Machar, has strongly condemned President Salva Kiir’s recent decisions to dismiss a number of its members from government positions. The movement described these actions as a “blatant violation” of the revitalized peace agreement in South Sudan.
Last week, President Kiir issued decrees fireing members of the SPLM-IO from the Transitional Legislative Council, the Council of States, and the executive branch, without prior consultation with the movement.
In a press statement signed by Joseph Malual Dong, Chairman of the Movement’s National Committee for Foreign Affairs, the movement demanded the immediate reinstatement of all its dismissed officials. It warned that these unilateral actions could plunge the country back into conflict, according to Radio Tamazuj’s website.
The statement read, “The movement’s political bureau accuses Kiir’s government of sideling the revitalized peace agreement and implementing an ‘unwritten agreement.'” It also warned that these actions threaten peace and could reignite war.
In its statement, the movement reiterated its demands for the “unconditional” release of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny, leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO), and all detained officials.
The movement also called for dialogue between Machar and Kiir to salvage the stalled peace process and urged the international community and regional organizations such as IGAD and the African Union, as well as international partners such as the United Nations, the European Union, and the Troika, to intervene urgently.
The movement urged South Sudanese people to recognize the violations of the peace agreement committed by President Kiir and his party.
Kiir’s recent decisions included the dismissal of Awet Netaniel, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Machar’s deputy in the movement, and Deng Deng, the Speaker of the Council of States, and the cancellation of the appointments of other members of the movement to parliament and the transitional government.
