Sudan Electricity Co.: Technical Reasons Behind Power Outages in Gezira State

Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon

The Sudan Electricity Company confirmed that the repeated power outages in Gezira State are purely technical and have nothing to do with any administrative or professional negligence.

In a statement published on Monday, seen by Sudanhorizon, the company said that the generation problem has not yet been resolved. The transmission line from Merowe to Gezira State has not yet been put into service and is undergoing maintenance after being damaged by rebel militias. The state’s electricity supply currently relies solely on electricity from the Roseires Dam and the Umm Dabakir Thermal Power Plant.

The statement indicated that the state had witnessed a significant increase in electrical loads after residents returned and started operating their appliances, requiring more energy to meet these growing needs.

The statement explained that the Umm Dabakir Thermal Power Plant suffers from repeated blackouts due to the unbalanced loads and the excess demand over availability, which takes between 4 and 6 hours to restore.

The statement emphasized that these repeated outages lead to power outages, the hotline going out of service, and increased outage periods.

The Sudan Electricity Company reassured residents of Al-Jazeera State that work is underway to increase power generation sources in the state to achieve greater stability in the electricity supply.
