Gezira Scheme Suffers $300 Million in Losses Due to Militia Attacks

The Governor of Gezira Scheme, Engineer Ibrahim Mustafa, has revealed that the initial losses inventory of the Gezira Scheme due to the destruction caused by the rebel militia amounted to 300 million dollars.

The Governor revealed in a press briefing, Thursday, a plan to rebuild the Scheme, saying that preparations are underway to organize a workshop to study the future status of the Scheme in the short, medium and long terms. He said a number of papers will be reviewed in the event focusing on regulations and laws of the Scheme, irrigation issues, governance and other concerns.

He underlined the existence of the driving political and financial will to support the Scheme.

The Governor said that they have been handed the entire Scheme from the command of the armed forces, which fulfilled its promise. He praised the efforts of the presidency, commenting “digging with needles but burying with loaders”, and he added by saying “We are determined to make the Scheme better than it was. Our starting point will be the peak reached by others in the field of technology.”

He pointed out that many international corporates have expressed desire to invest in the Schemes including from Türkiye, Egypt and China
