The Embassy of the Republic of Sudan in South Africa has called for those responsible for the massacres in El Fasher to be held accountable, warning against granting the perpetrators political legitimacy or allowing crimes against civilians to go uninvestigated and unpunished. The call was made in a statement issued to mark the first anniversary of the massacres.

According to the statement, the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, witnessed grave violations allegedly committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia following a prolonged siege. These included mass killings, summary executions, sexual violence, ethnic persecution and forced displacement, as well as the starvation of residents and the obstruction of humanitarian aid. The embassy called for a comprehensive investigation and accountability for everyone who committed, ordered or contributed to these violations.

The embassy urged the South African government, Parliament, political parties, civil society organisations and the media to give greater attention to the Sudanese tragedy and amplify the voices of victims and survivors. It also called on the African Union, the United Nations and Sudan’s partners to condemn what it described as the crimes committed in El Fasher and reject recognition of any parallel entities the militia seeks to impose by force.

The embassy further called for an end to the flow of weapons, funding and foreign fighters to the RSF, and urged support for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity and the right of its people to determine their own future free from external interference.

The statement also stressed the importance of supporting the Sudanese–Sudanese dialogue initiative as a means of advancing nationally led solutions and addressing the root causes of the crisis. It emphasised that civilian protection and justice for victims must be central to any political efforts to end the war.

The embassy reiterated its solidarity with the families of the victims, the wounded and displaced people, describing redress for those affected and the achievement of justice as a legal, moral and humanitarian obligation.
