Nabil Fahmy: Sudanese Dialogue Must Take Place Inside the Country

Khartoum – Sudanhorizon

The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Dr Nabil Fahmy, affirmed the League’s support for efforts to prepare for intra-Sudanese dialogue, stressing that the process must be exclusively Sudanese and take place primarily in Khartoum or elsewhere within Sudan. This, he said, would ensure Sudanese participation in rebuilding their state and achieving political and social stability.

Speaking after meeting the Sudanese Dialogue Groundwork Committee at its headquarters in Khartoum on Monday, Fahmy said his visit was intended to support the committee’s efforts and reflected his conviction in the importance of dialogue led by Sudanese people and expressing their aspirations. He noted that building a stable political and social fabric requires consideration of Sudanese identity and the interests of the Sudanese people.

He explained that successful dialogue requires preliminary arrangements agreed upon by the participants, taking into account the concerns of citizens and political forces. It also requires an action plan outlining specific steps and topics, allowing gradual progress and strengthening public and political confidence in the value of the dialogue process.

The Arab League Secretary-General stressed the importance of accommodating diverse viewpoints within the dialogue, provided that Sudanese statehood, sovereignty and institutions are respected. He affirmed that the League supports the initiative because of its Sudanese character and stands ready to provide the necessary assistance at specific stages.

For his part, Othman Mirghani, spokesperson for the Sudanese Dialogue Groundwork Committee, said the committee looked forward to an active role for the League of Arab States in supporting the process, strengthening its credibility and helping create the appropriate conditions for its launch, drawing on the League’s regional and international relations and contacts.

Speaking after the meeting with the Arab League Secretary-General, Mirghani said the discussions addressed developments in the Sudanese crisis and the League’s efforts to respond to it. He noted that most of the discussion focused on the dialogue process, its prospects and ways to create the conditions necessary for its success.

He explained that the meeting explored possible forms of support for the Sudanese Dialogue Groundwork Committee and ways to benefit from the Arab League’s expertise and advice to develop the committee’s work and strengthen its capacity to fulfil its mandate. Practical proposals were also discussed to expand cooperation in the coming period.

Mirghani said the committee hoped the League would contribute to building confidence in the dialogue process and supporting efforts to establish a suitable environment for it, including through the use of its extensive network of relations beyond Sudan.

He added that the meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on ways to cooperate in addressing the Sudanese crisis. He expressed hope that the Arab League would maintain its engagement and actively participate in efforts to help Sudanese people find solutions to their crisis and fulfil their legitimate aspirations through intra-Sudanese dialogue.
