Sudan and UNHCR Reach Understandings on Strengthening Partnership
Geneva – Sudanhorizon
Sudan’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid Hassan, met with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Barham Salih, and his senior aides. The discussions focused on the challenges facing internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees in neighboring countries and the region, as well as the challenges surrounding the voluntary return of over six million Sudanese from both categories. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UNHCR Executive Committee, currently being held in Geneva.
The meeting addressed the overall situation in Sudan, ongoing national efforts to create conditions conducive to voluntary return, and the importance of bolstering UNHCR’s support for recovery and stabilization efforts in areas of return.
The High Commissioner reaffirmed UNHCR’s commitment to its humanitarian mandate and its dedication to maintaining close cooperation with the Government of Sudan. He acknowledged the transformations the country is undergoing and the resulting challenges—particularly the return of large numbers of refugees and displaced persons to their home areas. He expressed his intention to visit Sudan soon to assess the situation and needs firsthand, emphasizing UNHCR’s commitment to strengthening its historic partnership and direct coordination with the Sudanese government to address these challenges. This includes humanitarian interventions, support for host communities, and the provision of essentials for voluntary return—such as basic services, protection, and integration—to ensure the sustainable stability of returnees.
