Suakin – Sudanhorizon – Hala Hamza

A number of residents of Suakin closed the entrances to Port Osman Digna on Thursday afternoon using containers, in protest against the decision to transfer the Director General of Suakin Port. The closure caused a halt in the movement of imports and exports at the port.

The protesters called for the decision to be reconsidered and for the director to be reinstated in his position.

Earlier on Thursday morning, October 1, the Director General of the Sea Ports Corporation, Consulting Engineer Gilani Mohamed Gilani, issued Administrative Decision No. (35) of 2026, ordering extensive transfers within the corporation’s departments. Among the decisions was the transfer of the Director General of Suakin Port, Captain Taha Mukhtar, from Suakin to the General Administration of Port Facilities, which reports directly to the Director General.

Mukhtar was appointed in 2021 by a decision of the former Director General of the Sea Ports Corporation, Captain Onor Mohamed.
