Darfur Region Governor, Minawi Accuses RSF Militia of Carrying out Ethnic and Cultural Cleansing

The Governor of the Darfur Region, Minni Arko Minawi, has accused the “terrorist” Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia of committing ethnic and cultural cleansing and systematically targeting Sudanese identity during the devastating war they waged in the country. He warned that hate speech, racial incitement, and intolerance are no longer merely theoretical concepts but lethal weapons that claim lives, destroy communities, and displace millions.
Minawi made these remarks on Wednesday during a high-level meeting marking the 25th anniversary of the “Durban Declaration and Programme of Action against Racism,” held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly sessions in New York.
Minawi stated that the world marks this anniversary while confronting a bitter reality: despite decades of struggle and international advocacy, structural racism and xenophobia continue to plague societies, with no community spared from their harmful effects, according to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA).
Minawi emphasized that a just future cannot be built without addressing the legacy of historical grievances. He noted that centuries of enslavement, colonialism, and systematic exploitation have resulted in economic depletion and deep wounds that continue to hinder developing nations—particularly on the African continent—from accessing fair global opportunities.
He further asserted that true reconciliation begins with historical acknowledgment, sincere apologies, and the forging of equitable, sustainable international economic partnerships. Minnawi called for three pathways toward a future free from racism: achieving reparative justice and historical accountability for the legacy of enslavement and colonialism—through acknowledgment, sincere apologies, and the establishment of equitable international economic partnerships; investing in rising generations by developing educational curricula that inform children and youth about the true history of racism and its devastating impacts, thereby ensuring that future generations do not inherit the animosities of the past; and solidifying a shared international responsibility to protect civilians and safeguard diversity.
In concluding his remarks, he reaffirmed Sudan’s full commitment to the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, as well as its dedication to building a state governed by peace, justice, and equality, where human rights are upheld without discrimination.
