Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov announced that a potential meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his US counterpart, Marco Rubio, is being arranged on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings in New York. The meeting is set to include a detailed discussion on the situation regarding Ukraine.

Speaking to the Russian news agency Sputnik on Saturday, Ryabkov said he believes the next high-level contact will be a conversation between Lavrov and Rubio. Both will be present at the UN General Assembly session. Naturally, this will provide a suitable occasion and framework to discuss the entire situation [regarding Ukraine] in detail.

Ryabkov explained that details regarding preparations for a new round of trilateral talks between Russia, the US, and Ukraine are not currently being discussed, noting, however, that the pause in negotiations is unlikely to last long.

He added: “We are not currently discussing details of preparations for upcoming rounds of trilateral talks. However, I am confident that the hiatus between them will not be prolonged.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had stated earlier this month that the United States must maintain contact with Russia “from a purely pragmatic standpoint.” Western media quoted Rubio as saying: “The United States must be able to communicate with Russia from a purely pragmatic standpoint. They possess the world’s largest nuclear stockpile and the second-largest nuclear arsenal overall.”
