Khartoum – Sudanhorizon

The Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, met in Khartoum on Thursday with a delegation from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), led by the organization’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu. The meeting was attended by Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohieddin Salem.

Speaking to the press, the IGAD Executive Secretary said his visit to Khartoum was part of ongoing consultations with the Sudanese leadership and an exchange of views on ways to achieve lasting peace in the country. He also expressed his deepest sympathy to all those who have lost their lives as a result of the war.

He noted that Sudan is one of IGAD’s founding members and one of its most important member states, highlighting its historic role as a bridge between the Arab and African worlds. He also praised Sudan’s humanitarian legacy, noting that for decades it has served as a refuge for millions of refugees from neighboring countries.

The Executive Secretary added that the delegation had witnessed firsthand the scale of destruction in the capital, Khartoum, and reiterated IGAD’s condemnation of all human rights violations committed in El Fasher and other war-affected areas.

He also commended the extraordinary resilience of the Sudanese people, noting that during the delegation’s visit to Port Sudan they observed a strong sense of national unity and determination to overcome the consequences of the war and build a better future.

He stressed that IGAD’s mission is to support the Sudanese people, not to impose solutions upon them, emphasizing that peace can only be achieved inside Sudan and by Sudanese themselves.

“Sudanese thinkers and political leaders are best positioned to shape their country’s future and achieve peace, while IGAD’s role is limited to facilitating and supporting every national effort that contributes to ending the war,” he said.

The head of the delegation reaffirmed the organization’s readiness to support all peace initiatives and efforts led by the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, and the Sudanese government to achieve peace and stability. He also expressed appreciation for Al-Burhan’s commitment to the path of peace and affirmed that IGAD would continue working closely with the Sudanese government in support of efforts to secure a lasting and comprehensive peace in the country.
