The General Secretariat of the Unionist Alliance has expressed its concern regarding the ongoing developments in the city of El Obeid.
In a statement issued on Sunday, it commended the courage and resilience of the city’s residents, who have remained steadfast in their homes despite the harsh conditions and the repeated attack against the city by drones and by the Janjaweed militia.
The statement affirmed that this resilience embodies the will of the citizens and their adherence to their legitimate right to a safe and dignified life on their land.
The Gathering strongly condemned the systematic targeting of infrastructure in El Obeid, including electricity and water stations and service facilities, and the continued violations that affect the lives and daily livelihoods of the people. It stressed that targeting basic services constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and exacerbates the suffering of innocent civilians.
The statement also called on all civil and political forces and civil society organizations, regardless of their names or orientations, to take a clear and firm stance in condemning this systematic behavior against civilians and to work to expose these crimes to local, regional, and international public opinion. It asserted that the scale of the crimes and violations committed by this militia against the Sudanese people necessitates a serious effort to designate it as a terrorist group, especially given its repeated targeting of civilians and civilian and service infrastructure.
The Alliance affirmed its full support for the citizens of El Obeid and their fundamental right to a dignified life, security, and stability, and their right to remain in their city without fear or threat. It reiterated its solidarity with all those affected and called for intensified national efforts to protect civilians.
