Irrigation Undersecretary: Northern Gezira Canal Dryness Falls Under Project Irrigation Committee
Sudanhorizon – Hala Hamza
Farmer Othman Ibrahim from the Gezira Scheme complained to Sudanhorizon about the continued closure of the main irrigation gates, especially in the northern parts of the project, since mid-March, which has caused irrigation canals to dry up.
Othman told Sudanhorizon that despite the negative impact on irrigation, the drying of the canals could serve as an opportunity to carry out cleaning and maintenance work. He called on the project’s official authorities to urgently clean the canals, remove weeds, and reopen the gates to restore water flow to the project’s agricultural lands.
For his part, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Engineer Dou Al-Bait Abdel Rahman Mansour, told Sudanhorizon that the ministry’s role is limited to providing water at the reservoir level. He noted that a dedicated irrigation administration for the Gezira Scheme had been established by a decision of the Prime Minister and is the body responsible for the matter.
Dou Al-Bait explained that the ministry’s task is to deliver water to the gates of the Gezira and Al-Managil canals at Sennar Dam, adding that the Gezira Scheme Irrigation Administration is fully aware of all details and plans related to managing water distribution within the project.
