EU Special Envoy Discusses Sudan Crisis Resolution with Foreign Minister

On the sidelines of his participation in the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, the minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mohi El-Din Salem, discussed with the European Union Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa,. Anita Weber, the latest developments in Sudan and the Sudanese government’s vision for reaching a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the conflict.

The Minister stated that Sudan’s vision is based on the peace initiative presented by the Prime Minister to the UN Security Council last December, which calls for a ceasefire, the protection of civilians, and the restoration of state institutions, while emphasizing the need to respect Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

The Minister stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of the crisis, including halting foreign interference and curbing the flow of foreign fighters, as these are key factors fueling the conflict and hindering peace efforts.

For her part, the EU Special Envoy affirmed the Union’s commitment to supporting de-escalation efforts and reaching a humanitarian truce that paves the way for a comprehensive ceasefire. She emphasized the importance of coordinating international initiatives, including the Quartet process, to achieve tangible progress on the ground.

The meeting also addressed regional issues, with the minister stressing that stability in Sudan being a cornerstone for the stability of the Horn of Africa. He emphasized the need for regional states to play a positive role in supporting the peace process, free from any negative interference.

Both sides agreed on the importance of continued coordination and consultation, supporting UN-led initiatives, and strengthening direct engagement with various parties to advance efforts to achieve stability in Sudan.
