The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN agency, on Monday said the improved security in some parts of Sudan has contributed to the return of nearly 4 million people to their homes, bringing the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) down to 8.9 million.
This represents a 23% decrease compared to the peak of 11.5 million recorded in January 2025, before the number gradually declined due to increased returns following the army’s recapture of the states of Sinnar, Gezira, and Khartoum.
In a report, the IOM stated that “the number of IDPs has decreased to 8,936,175, after 3,994,018 individuals returned to their homes, including 3,330,680 internally displaced persons and 663,339 who returned from neighboring countries.”
The report attributed the return to improved security conditions in some areas, with 92% of returnees going back to their original areas. The remainder moved to nearby areas due to ongoing risks or the destruction of their homes.
The report indicated that 1,835,397 people returned to Khartoum, and 1,130,260 to Gezira State. The rest were distributed across Sinnar, Blue Nile, White Nile, North Kordofan, North and South Darfur, River Nile, and Northern States.
The report also noted that displacement continues in some areas. The number of displaced people in Blue Nile State increased by 3% during March due to escalating security tensions since mid-January, resulting in the displacement of 28,020 people from the localities of Baw, Kurmuk, and Qisan.
