UN Secretary General Personal Envoy, Haavisto, Arrives in Port Sudan
Port Sudan – Mariam Abasher
The Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Pekka Haavisto, arrived in Port Sudan earlier Monday for his first visit to Sudan since his appointment last February as Special Envoy, succeeding Ramtane Lamamra.
Informed sources, while confirming a report published by Sudanhorizon last week, said Haavisto’s visit will last three days, during which he will meet with senior government officials to discuss the latest developments in Sudan, against the backdrop of the war, which is nearing its third year and has resulted in numerous violations and humanitarian crises affecting civilians.
It is worth noting that UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed the Finnish diplomat and politician Pekka Haavisto as his new Personal Envoy to Sudan, succeeding the Algerian Lamamra, with the aim of intensifying mediation efforts to revive the peace process, end the conflict, and address the humanitarian and political crises.
The appointment of Haavisto, who is a carrier diplomat with extensive experience, also aims to strengthen UN diplomacy in Sudan in light of the ongoing challenges.
