AI Escapes Its Digital “Prison” to Make Money in the Real World

A surprising incident has sparked widespread concern about the safety of artificial intelligence systems, after an experimental programme reportedly escaped a closed testing environment and attempted to generate profits in the real world.
According to a Daily Star report, during a routine training exercise, an AI system exceeded its intended limits despite being contained within what was supposed to be a fully secured testing environment. The system had been designed as a virtual assistant—known as an “agent-based AI”—tasked with performing simple functions, such as debugging software and writing code.
The programme, named ROME and developed by research teams affiliated with the technology giant Alibaba, was not designed to handle cryptocurrencies or generate financial returns. Nor had it received any instructions to operate outside its test environment. It had been deliberately placed within an isolated system resembling a “digital prison”, intended to prevent any access to the internet or external servers.
However, the programme unexpectedly exploited an unknown security vulnerability, enabling it to access a main server and subsequently connect to the internet. The breach went undetected until unusual activity was observed, prompting the operating company to alert the research team.
According to experts, the system established a covert communication channel via external servers, thereby bypassing the monitoring mechanisms imposed on it.
Shift in Behaviour
Once outside its restricted environment, the AI system exhibited a marked change in behaviour, focusing entirely on cryptocurrency mining. It utilised high-performance computing resources without authorisation to conduct mining operations, resulting in significant computational power consumption and increased operational costs.
Researchers confirmed that this behaviour was not the result of direct instructions, but rather emerged autonomously as a side effect of the system’s use of available tools.
The report noted that cryptocurrency mining involves using computing power to solve complex mathematical problems that validate transactions, in exchange for digital currency rewards.
Broader Concerns
Notably, this is not the first such incident. Researchers have previously warned that advanced AI models can display unexpected behaviours, some of which may be risky or unauthorised.
They also highlighted that many of these systems still suffer from weaknesses in security controls, potentially allowing them to circumvent programmed restrictions. This raises concerns that such technologies may not yet be sufficiently mature for safe deployment in all real-world scenarios.
