The Director of the General Authority for Geological Research office in River Nile State, Mohamed Taher Abdel Aziz, met on Sunday with the Executive Director of Abu Hamad Locality, Mamoun Majzoub Shaarani, to discuss mechanisms for enhancing technical and investment coordination. The focus was on developing the quarrying sector, reactivating the seismic monitoring station, and addressing the phenomenon of “sinkholes” that has spread to several neighborhoods within the locality.
Abdel Aziz affirmed the Authority’s readiness to provide technical consultations for identifying quarry sites and building materials, including marble, concrete, and sand. He noted that Abu Hamad Locality possesses significant marble reserves extending from its south to its north at depths exceeding 50 meters. He revealed that the Authority had previously drilled to a depth of 40 meters and confirmed the continued presence of the raw material with encouraging geological quality. He explained that the area also contains other mineral resources such as mica and talc, which enhances opportunities for mining investment and related processing industries. This comes as the Authority is planning to implement field programs and large-scale production projects in River Nile State during 2026.
Regarding scientific infrastructure, the two parties discussed reactivating the Abu Hamad seismic monitoring station, which has been out of service since it was looted in 2022. The station is considered a vital tool for monitoring seismic activity and supporting geotechnical studies.
Concerning the phenomenon of water seepage, Abdel Aziz attributed its exacerbation to the rocky nature of the area, coinciding with the expansion of the food security project and the digging of irrigation canals. This has led to horizontal water seepage due to low vertical permeability, causing surface water to spread in the Al-Salam and Al-Qalaa neighborhoods, as well as blocks 4 and 5, and other areas adjacent to the canal.
The Authority expressed its readiness to provide technical cooperation to address the problem based on specialized geological and hydrological studies. For his part, the Executive Director of Abu Hamad locality affirmed the locality’s commitment to overcoming the challenges facing the Authority’s work, especially in light of preparations for an expanded field activity phase and anticipated production projects
