Darfur Diaspora Associations-UK Launch Legal Action against Perpetrators of Crimes in Darfur
London – Sudanhorizon
The Darfur Diaspora Association in the United Kingdom has initiated legal proceedings to prosecute those responsible for crimes against humanity, genocide, and ethnic cleansing committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in El Fasher and other areas of Sudan.
The Association will initiate its action in London tomorrow (Tuesday) with an important meeting that brings together a number of leading international lawyers and experts in international criminal law.
According to a statement issued by the association in London, the meeting aims to discuss the grave violations of international humanitarian law and international criminal law committed by the RSF militia in El Fasher, as well as the genocide and ethnic cleansing perpetrated against civilians, based on victim testimonies, field reports, and satellite imagery.
The statement indicated that the coalition also intends to hold another event on Wednesday in coordination with human rights organizations and relevant institutions. It will also hold a similar meeting with the families of victims and survivors in the United Kingdom next Saturday in Birmingham.
These actions are part of a visit by a coalition delegation that will continue until February 1st. The coalition emphasized that this step is part of initiating legal proceedings to prosecute all those responsible for these crimes and rejecting any form of impunity, regardless of the status of those involved.
The coalition called upon the Sudanese people, human rights activists, lawyers, civil society organizations, and all people of conscience to provide legal, technical, and material support to ensure justice for the victims, reparations for the displaced and refugees, and the achievement of justice.
Among the human rights experts with whom discussions will be held is Charles Taco, a prominent defense lawyer before the International Criminal Court, with over four decades of experience in national and international legal work. He has previously served as lead defense counsel in a number of complex international cases involving war crimes and crimes against humanity, as well as participating in several high-profile cases before the International Criminal Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and the Special Court for Sierra Leone. He also served as president of the ICC Bar Association and received the African Bar Association’s Outstanding Leadership Award in 2025. He is an associate professor at Harvard Law School.
Taco is accompanied by his colleague Thomas John, an international legal expert at the ICC specializing in international criminal law, war crimes, and genocide.
