A Reading of the Professionalism of Egypt’s Ministry of the Interior in Handling Incidents Involving Sudanese Nationals
Police Brigadier (Ret.)
Omar Mohammed Othman
The conditions of war in Sudan have driven millions of Sudanese to the Arab Republic of Egypt, which has long been—and remains—the nearest and safest destination for Sudanese people.
With this large humanitarian presence, some security challenges have naturally emerged, as crime is a social phenomenon inherent in every human society, regardless of how stable it may be.
What has recently drawn attention, however, has not been the occurrence of such incidents per se, but rather the manner in which Egypt’s Ministry of the Interior has dealt with them—reflecting a high level of professionalism, competence, and justice.
In recent incidents involving some Sudanese nationals, time has emerged as the decisive factor in Egyptian security performance. The competent authorities demonstrated remarkable speed in unravelling the circumstances of the cases; investigations no longer extended over weeks or months but were concluded within a few days, or even hours. This rapid response confirmed that justice in Egypt tolerates neither delay nor discrimination, and that the arm of the law can reach perpetrators regardless of their nationality or that of the victims—thereby reinforcing confidence that the security of residents is an integral part of the state’s own security.
In this context, a qualitative shift has also become evident in security practices, with a reliance on digital surveillance and electronic monitoring as effective tools of preventive security. Social media platforms have effectively become a security radar through which the competent authorities monitor published reports and calls for help, treating them as official signals requiring immediate action. This automatic response reflects a firm conviction that security is not a service to be requested, but a responsibility exercised proactively by the state to ensure the safety of all who live on its soil.
This balanced, pragmatic approach embodies the concept of human security, linking legal firmness with the social dimension. It contributes to strengthening social peace by nipping discord in the bud and preventing rumours, while building trust among Sudanese that they are living in a state governed by the rule of law that protects them and safeguards their dignity. At the same time, it achieves general deterrence by sending a clear message that Egypt’s security forces are vigilant against any threat to residents’ safety.
What Egypt’s Ministry of the Interior is doing in relation to incidents affecting some Sudanese nationals goes beyond the notion of routine professional duty to the level of national and humanitarian responsibility. Its success in swiftly identifying perpetrators and bringing them to justice stands as a testament to the competence of the Egyptian security institution, and as proof that the spirit of law and justice prevails above all other considerations. Egypt thus remains a canopy of safety and justice for all who seek refuge within it.
In conclusion, we can only express our sincere thanks and appreciation to the Arab Republic of Egypt—its leadership, people, and institutions—for its noble stance towards Sudanese brothers and sisters, and for the refined humanitarian and security cooperation it demonstrates, embodying the depth of the historic ties between the two brotherly peoples. Egypt has proven, in word and deed, that it is the homeland of Arabism and a refuge for brethren, and that the values of justice and fairness are not mere slogans, but a lived reality practised with a spirit of responsibility and humanity. From the heart: thank you to Egypt the state—and thank you to Egypt the human.
