WHO Urges World Community Not to Ignore the Sudan
Geneva – Sudanhorizon
The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the ongoing war in Sudan has pushed the health system to the brink of collapse and called on the international community not to ignore the situation in the country.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that Sudan is facing one of the world’s most serious humanitarian and public health emergencies.
In a press statement, he added that more than 33.7 million people, more than half the country’s population, now need urgent life-saving assistance, noting that the ongoing conflict has pushed the health system to the brink of total collapse.
He warned that recent attacks on medical facilities have exacerbated this crisis, citing a March 20 drone strike on Al-Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur that killed at least 64 people, including patients and medical staff, and injured 89 others. A few days later, on April 2, another drone strike targeted Al-Jabalain Hospital in White Nile State, killing 10 medical and administrative staff, including the hospital director, while he was performing surgery, and injuring 22 others.
He added that on the same day, the Family Hospital in Al-Daein was looted, and patients and healthcare workers were assaulted and expelled, forcing it to cease operations. On March 25, a hospital in Kurmuk, Blue Nile State, was looted, with equipment destroyed, staff and patients forced to flee, and one staff member seriously injured.
Tedros Adhanom added that these incidents underscore the urgent need for renewed international solidarity and decisive political and humanitarian action. Sudan cannot bear this crisis alone, he stressed.
