US Department of State Calls for a Humanitarian Truce in Sudan

Washington – Sudanhorizon

The United States issued what it described as an appeal on the occasion of the third anniversary of the outbreak of the devastating civil war in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The statement called on the warring parties to implement a ceasefire without preconditions and urged external parties fueling the conflict by supplying weapons to cease doing so. It also announced that it would impose sanctions on a number of individuals and entities supplying these weapons.

The US Department of the State statement, released Friday evening, said that “the Trump administration is imposing sanctions on five individuals and entities responsible for fueling this conflict, which has caused the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.” The statement noted that since April 2023, more than 150,000 people have been killed, more than 14 million have been displaced, and famine conditions persist in conflict-affected areas.

The statement added that the war in Sudan “further destabilizes an already fragile region, creating opportunities for terrorist groups that threaten U.S. interests and regional security.”

The statement affirmed that the Trump administration remains committed to achieving lasting peace in Sudan, as demonstrated by the U.S. provision of $20 million in emergency food assistance in March and an additional $200 million recently contributed to the U.S.-hosted Sudan Humanitarian Fund appeal in February.

The statement continued that the United States calls on both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to accept an immediate, unconditional, three-month humanitarian truce. Such a truce would enable vital humanitarian assistance to reach those in need, protect civilians, and create the conditions for negotiations toward a permanent ceasefire. It stressed that the United States will continue to take actions against those who fuel the conflict in Sudan
