Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed regional and international issues, primarily the situations in Iran and Ukraine, during a phone call with his American counterpart Donald Trump on Monday.
Washington stated that Moscow expressed a willingness to be helpful regarding the war with Tehran.
Trump, speaking at a Republican conference in Florida, described the call with Putin as “positive and good,” explaining that they discussed developments in the war in Ukraine.
The US president indicated that President Putin has expressed a willingness to be helpful regarding the war with Iran.
For his part, Russian Presidential Aide for International Affairs Yuri Ushakov told reporters that the US president contacted Putin to discuss developments in Iran and Ukraine, while Putin presented several proposals during the call aimed at quickly ending the Iranian conflict, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
According to Ushakov, the call lasted about an hour. He described the conversation as “constructive, professional, and frank,” noting that the exchange of views was “very fruitful” and yielded “useful results.”
The Russian president’s aide for international affairs stated that “Trump gave his assessment of the developments in the context of the ongoing US-Israeli strikes on Iran.”
Ushakov said that Putin presented Trump with his proposals for a swift resolution to the conflict with Iran, adding that the two presidents also “discussed the Ukrainian conflict and the situation in Venezuela in the context of the global oil market.”
This is the first phone call between Putin and Trump in more than two months, and the first publicly acknowledged contact between them since the US-Israeli attack on Iran.
Regarding the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the Kremlin stated that Trump reiterated his desire to end the conflict in Ukraine “soon.”
Ushakov noted that Putin, during the call, described the “successful advance of Russian forces along the line of contact” as “an important indicator,” emphasizing that this achievement could encourage Ukrainian authorities to pursue a negotiated settlement to the conflict.
The call between the two presidents coincided with reports from three informed sources that the US administration is considering easing sanctions on Russian oil to help mitigate the sharp rise in global energy prices. This move could complicate US efforts to deprive Moscow of revenue from its war in Ukraine, according to Reuters.
