UNICEF: We Must Act Now to Save Children of Sudan

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell expressed deep concern over the escalating violence against children and families in Sudan’s Al-Jazira State.
Russell described reports of mass killings, widespread sexual violence against women and girls, and the destruction of homes and livelihoods as horrifying.
In a statement published by UNICEF on Monday, Russell highlighted that in the past week alone, reports indicated at least 124 people had been killed in Al-Jazira, including at least ten children, some as young as ten years old, and at least 43 children were injured.
The statement continued: “We have also received distressing reports that many girls, some as young as 13, have been raped and sexually assaulted, and children have been detained. Over 9,000 families, totalling more than 45,000 people, were forced to flee their homes in Tamboul and surrounding villages between October 20 and 27, 2024. This violence is part of a massive man-made humanitarian catastrophe that has already killed and injured thousands.”
Russell noted that the war has resulted in over 11 million child fatalities and left millions at extreme risk, making Sudan the epicentre of the world’s largest displacement and humanitarian crisis, one that increasingly impacts the broader region.
UNICEF’s Executive Director emphasized, “The world cannot stand idly by as Sudan’s children face unimaginable horrors.” She added, “We must act now to protect their future and uphold their right to safety and peace.”
