UN Welcomes Sudan’s Decision to Keep Adre Crossing Open

New York – Sudanhorizon

The United Nations welcomed the Sudanese government’s decision to keep the Adre border crossing open for humanitarian operations, allowing UN agencies and humanitarian organizations to deliver aid to people affected by the conflict in Sudan.

UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the United Nations welcomed the decision by the Sudanese authorities to keep the Adre crossing open. He noted that Adre is a border crossing linking Chad and Sudan and that the United Nations and humanitarian organizations will be able to use it at least until the end of the year.

The UN official added: “The Adre crossing, as you know, is a vital lifeline for many people in Darfur. During the first eight months of this year, more than 1,300 trucks carrying over 50,000 metric tons of aid crossed into Sudan through this crossing.”

Dujarric said in remarks on Thursday evening that keeping the Adre crossing open and ensuring safe access on the ground were among the priorities identified by Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher, who emphasized their critical importance during meetings of the United Nations General Assembly.
