UN Calls on Parties to Sudan Conflict to Protect Civilians and Allow Humanitarian Access

The Deputy Spokesperson for the United Nations, Farhan Haq, has called on all parties to the conflict in Sudan to protect civilians and allow rapid, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access to those in need everywhere. He stressed the need to stop attacks against civilians and essential infrastructure in Sudan.
According to the UN Information Centre, Haq has stressed that attacks witnessed in Sudan over the past few days have resulted in civilian deaths and injuries across the country, particularly in the Kordofan states.
He noted that the main roads linking El Obeid in North Kordofan State to Dilling and Kadugli in South Kordofan State have become increasingly unsafe, which he said is hindering the movement of humanitarian and commercial supplies. He added that bureaucratic complexities are exacerbating these challenges, as essential medical activities in El Obeid have been suspended for nearly a month. He said that the military escalation near the border with Ethiopia in Blue Nile State has severely hampered humanitarian operations, while increasing insecurity and restrictions on the movement of humanitarian workers in Darfur are stifling access.
He added, aid workers are facing armed robberies and attacks along main roads, and some organizations have been forced to suspend their operations entirely, leaving vulnerable populations with even greater shortages of available services.
Despite these challenges, the UN Deputy Spokesperson said that the organization and its partners continue to do their utmost to respond to needs across Sudan, stressing the imperative of protecting civilians at all times, which should come as no surprise, as it is a fundamental requirement under international humanitarian law .
