Sudan’s Representative to Geneva: Militia Aggression Obstructed Sudan’s Accession WTO

Geneva -Sudanhorizon

Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Hassan Hamid, reviewed the scope of the systematic sabotage carried out by the rebel militia against the country’s infrastructure and economy, including major production and manufacturing projects, ministries, institutions, and agencies related to the financial and banking systems.

Presenting Sudan’s statement to the 16th Ministerial Conference of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on Thursday, the Representative said that prior to the outbreak of the terrorist militia rebellion, Sudan had made significant progress in its accession arrangements to the World Trade Organization (WTO), but all these preparatory work and arrangements were temporarily suspended.

In this context, he pointed to Sudan’s rich and diverse resources, rarely found in any other country, including minerals, most notably gold, in addition to oil, and vast and diverse agricultural resources, which bode well for major investment opportunities, particularly in the agricultural and production sectors, at a time when the world is facing food and water crisis.

He stated that Sudan, in coordination with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), had made progress in preparing for the regional conference on Gum Arabic in Khartoum, had it not been for the militia rebellion, which temporarily suspended all these arrangements.

The ambassador emphasized the importance of supporting capacity-building for least developed countries (LDCs) so they can integrate into the global economy.

In this context, he highlighted the challenges facing developing countries, most notably the digital divide, at a time when trade and supply chains are increasingly reliant on digital technology, including the use of artificial intelligence.

He emphasized the need to double efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, which remain out of reach for developing countries, and urged the international community to intensify efforts to leave no one behind.
