Floods and torrential rains that struck several Sudanese states have claimed the lives of 51 people, most of them in River Nile State in the north of the country, while 31 others were injured, according to official information obtained by the Sudanhorizon news site.
Major General Qureshi Hussein Abdel Qader, Assistant Director-General for Emergencies at the Civil Defence Forces, told Sudanhorizon that the number of houses completely destroyed across all states had reached 951 according to the latest statistics today, while around 4,152 homes were partially damaged, noting that these figures are subject to increase.
He pointed out that about 20 government facilities were completely damaged, while 114 commercial premises and warehouses were also affected.
The official reported that some 9,900 feddans of farmland were damaged by the floods in the affected states, revealing that seven states were the worst hit: River Nile, Northern, Khartoum, White Nile, Blue Nile, Sennar, and Gezira. He noted that River Nile State and Al-Damer town were the most affected among the seven.
The Assistant Director of the Emergencies Department revealed that the Civil Defence has established emergency operations rooms in every state, chaired by the state’s Civil Defence Director and with the State Minister of Infrastructure as secretary, to monitor the situation and implement rapid response measures.
He added that the Civil Defence Forces intervene when the damage exceeds the state’s capacity.
Lieutenant General Qureshi also warned citizens living near flood paths and riverbanks to exercise caution, noting that the Civil Defence, in coordination with the Ministry of Telecommunications, issues daily warning bulletins via text messages to alert residents.
