Sudanese Sovereign Council Chairman, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held joint talks at the Turkish Presidential Palace on Thursday. The discussions focused on enhancing and developing bilateral relations and advancing cooperation between the two countries. The two leaders also addressed regional and international issues, particularly the situations in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.

The Sudanese Sovereign Council’s media office reported that the talks also covered the latest developments in Sudan and efforts to achieve peace. Regional and international efforts to establish peace and stability in Sudan were reviewed, and Turkey reaffirmed its unwavering support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

The talks also emphasized Turkey’s readiness to provide all possible assistance to the Sudanese people in addressing the current humanitarian crisis through aid provided by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).

The summit also stressed the need to end the crimes being committed against the Sudanese people and to hold those responsible accountable. The Chairman of the Sovereign Council expressed his gratitude to Turkey for its supportive stances towards Sudan in regional and international forums, emphasizing the depth of Sudanese-Turkish relations.

He also thanked President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his invitation to visit Turkey, noting the enduring ties between the two nations.

Strengthening Military Cooperation

In the meantime, the Turkish political analyst Firas Ridvan Oglu described Burhan’s visit to Turkey as important, given its timing.

In an exclusive statement to the news website “Sudanhorizon,” Oglu said that Burhan has good relations with Turkey, and he believes Burhan wants to strengthen military cooperation with it. He added, “We have recently observed an imbalance of power between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces” militias,

Oglu also mentioned that Saudi Arabia is exerting significant political and diplomatic efforts in Sudan, adding that Sudan also needs a strong Turkish role in resolving its crisis.

The analyst ruled out the revival of the Turkish initiative on mediation between Sudan and the UAE, saying, “I don’t think the visit will be in that direction.” He expected the strengthening of military and technical ties between the two countries, and the creation of perhaps a quasi-political alliance between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, and a number of other countries in order to put pressure on the Rapid Support Forces and those behind them.
