Sudanese surgeon Dr. Al-Baraa Hijazi has scored a remarkable medical breakthrough in the urology department of a hospital in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. He has successfully treated a rare and complex case of a young patient who arrived at the emergency room displaying severe flank pain, a high fever, and blood in his urine.

Examinations revealed that the patient suffered from a rare congenital malformation of the urinary tract. He had two branched ureters on his left side, forming a Y shape. Medical literature indicates that such malformations occur in only 1-4% of the population, and most people affected do not experience any symptoms throughout their lives. However, in this exceptional case, a large, hard stone had formed in the upper part of this extra ureter, causing a severe obstruction and a serious infection that threatened the kidney.

Due to the seriousness of the situation, the case was treated in two stages; The first step was an urgent emergency intervention to relieve the obstruction and protect the kidney from damage. This was followed by a precise therapeutic procedure using a flexible endoscope and laser lithotripsy, one of the latest medical techniques. This enabled the medical team to access the abnormal path of the ureter and break up the stone without the need for open surgery and without any complications. The operation was a complete success, and the patient made a full recovery – according to the latest advancements in modern medicine.

Dr. Baraa Hijazi, who performed the operation, confirmed that the presence of a stone causing an obstruction in the upper part of a ureter in this manner is extremely rare. In an exclusive statement to Sudanhorizon, Dr. Hijazi said that such cases are only documented in a limited number of medical reports worldwide. He added that a stone causing obstruction and symptoms in the upper part of the ureter in this way is a rare occurrence, representing less than 1% of similar cases.

It is worth mentioning that Dr. Al-Baraa Hijazi was born in 1992 in the River Nile State, and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the Ribat University in Khartoum in 2015. He obtained his doctorate and the Sudanese Board in Kidney and Urinary Tract Surgery in 2023. He has more than ten medical research papers published internationally, and he worked in the field of medical research in New York City between 2023 and 2025. He currently holds the position of Head of the Department of Kidney and Urinary Tract Surgery at Al-Hayat National Hospital in Riyadh.
