Sudanese FM Outlines Sudan’s Position on Key Sudanese Issues of International Interest to Global Media

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohieddin Salem, outlined Sudan’s position on a number of current developments before a large gathering of international media outlets at the Sudanese Mission in New York on Thursday evening. He also presented the official position of the Government of Sudan regarding what it described as the United States’ violation of its international obligations under the 1947 Headquarters Agreement between the United Nations and the United States.

In the presence of Darfur Region Governor Minni Arko Minnawi and Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman’s Foreign and Political Affairs Adviser Amjad Farid Al-Tayeb, the minister provided international media representatives with an account of the background to the events that have unfolded in Sudan since the outbreak of the war in April 2023. He described the war as having been “imposed on Sudan,” adding that some Sudanese had been used by external powers to implement agendas and ambitions serving those powers.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation affirmed that Sudan has been and remains engaged with the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt in efforts to find a settlement to the crisis. He said Sudan’s reservations regarding the fourth member of the Quad stemmed from its conclusion that the United Arab Emirates was involved in providing external support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which, he said, rejected its commitments under the Jeddah Agreement one month after the war began. He added that it was unacceptable for a party to the conflict to also serve as a mediator in resolving it.

Regarding international mediation efforts, the Foreign Minister said Sudan welcomed President Trump’s involvement in efforts to resolve the war in Sudan, following an appeal by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He said Sudan continues to engage with the general framework of those efforts and has put forward a number of practical proposals in this regard.

The press conference also provided an opportunity to respond to questions from international media outlets and highlight Sudan’s official position on the issues under discussion.
