Sudanese Expert: Abiy’s Invitation to Egypt and Sudan to Attend GERD Inauguration Malicious Act

Cairo – Sudanhorizon – Sabah Musa
The Sudanese international law expert, Dr. Ahmed Al-Mufti has confirmed that the invitation by the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ‘to both Egypt and Sudan to attend the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam inauguration ceremony was but a malicious enterprise.
Al-Mufti, who resigned as a member from the International Committee on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, told Sudanhorizon that accepting this invitation would legalize Ethiopia’s illegal construction and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and deprive Sudan and Egypt of any claim to their legitimate water rights.
He added that Addis Ababa has been reassuring Sudan and Egypt since the beginning of negotiations in 2011 that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam would not negatively impact them, but its actions have been completely different.
He added that Ethiopia was carrying out all work on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam unilaterally, despite the fact that all relevant international forums, including the UN Security Council, the African Union, the European Union, and the Arab League, had called on it not to do so.
Mufti pointed out that Addis Ababa’s excuse for this was that it considers the Blue Nile an Ethiopian lake. He said that this excuse was worse than the crime, because the entire Nile River is an international river, and no riparian state has the right to dispose of it unilaterally.
He considered the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam next September to be an additional provocative act.
Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had invited Egypt and Sudan, Thursday, to attend the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam next September, stressing that the dam is not a source of concern but rather a blessing, and that it will not harm Egypt or Sudan. He stated that his country does not seek to harm any of its neighbors.
