Sudan Welcomes Engagement with the US Regarding Allegations of Chemical Weapons

Sudan’s statement at the 109th session of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), held in The Hague, Netherlands, revealed that the US side expressed initial willingness to objectively address the allegations underlying the accusations regarding the Sudanese Armed Forces’ use of chemical weapons in their confrontation with the Rapid Support Forces rebellion.
The statement also revealed that the Sudanese government is currently working “through technical channels with the US side, which has expressed its willingness to provide Sudan with the necessary data and details in the coming period.”
The Sudanese delegation called on the Executive Council to allow this process to complete its work in a spirit of constructive cooperation.
As part of its round of work, the Executive Council of the Organization discussed the recent US allegations regarding the use of chemical weapons in Sudan, in light of requests for clarification received by the organization from several member states.
Ambassador Omaima Al-Sharif, Chargé d’Affaires of the Sudanese Embassy in the Netherlands, delivered the statement of the Sudanese delegation participating in the session on Wednesday. She expressed the Sudanese government’s firm position on the Chemical Weapons Convention, which is an integral part of the national legal framework. The statement affirmed that Sudan categorically and in principle rejects the use of chemical weapons and adheres to its international obligations in this regard.
The delegation also affirmed that the Sudanese government is dealing seriously and transparently with these allegations, giving them the attention that is consistent with its legal and moral responsibilities. The Sudanese government has already begun taking practical measures to address these allegations, including the formation of a national committee comprising representatives of relevant national institutions. This committee has been authorized to investigate the matter immediately upon receiving the required technical information.
At the conclusion of the statement, the Sudanese government affirmed its full commitment to the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention and its full readiness to cooperate with the organization and all States Parties in support of international efforts aimed at preventing the proliferation and use of chemical weapons and promoting security and peace at the regional and international levels.
