Sudan Envoy: EU Firm on Unity, Rejects Parallel Government

Sudanhorizon – Maryam Absher

Diplomatic sources revealed that European envoys are expected to visit Sudan at the end of this month.

The sources told Sudanhorizon that the visit aims to continue discussions and consultations with officials and relevant bodies concerned with humanitarian work within the government.

The sources said that a European technical delegation, comprising a number of European officials, had visited Port Sudan two weeks ago and met with several government officials. They added that the expected delegation is set to visit Sudan by the end of this month or, at the latest, early February.

In this context, Sudan’s Ambassador in Brussels and Head of Sudan’s Mission to the European Union, Abdelbaqi Hamdan Kabir, affirmed that the European Union’s position on Sudan’s unity and the preservation of its sovereignty is firm, declared, and unchanged since the outbreak of the war. He added that this steadfast position was confirmed by the European Parliament in an official statement in November of last year, stressing that it does not recognize any parallel government or authorities in areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces. Similar confirmations have also been included in all statements issued jointly and individually by European commissions.

Kabir told Sudanhorizon that the European Union has always emphasized respect for Sudanese sovereignty and the preservation of the country’s territorial integrity. He noted that its most recent statement reiterated the same firm position, stressing Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial unity and rejecting the recognition of any parallel entities or authorities in areas controlled by the militia. He added that the EU continues to call on all its member states to adhere to this position.

The European Union had issued a statement last Thursday renewing its support for Sudan’s unity, rejecting any parallel governments, and stressing the importance of a humanitarian truce and a ceasefire to protect civilians and pave the way for the political process.
