Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
The member states of the African Minerals and Earth Sciences Centre (AMGC) unanimously elected the Sudan as Chair of the Centre’s Board of Directors, succeeding Ethiopia. This move reflects Sudan’s growing prominence in regional forums concerned with the mining and earth sciences sectors.
The Sudanese delegation to the meeting, convened onTuesday in Tanzania, was headed by the Director General of the General Authority for Geological Research and Sudan’s representative on the Centre’s Board of Directors, Ahmed Haroun Al-Toumi. He chaired the meeting sessions and discussed with the Board members a number of issues related to developing the Centre’s performance, its future plans, and its technical and scientific programs.
The African Minerals and Earth Sciences Centre, headquartered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is one of the leading regional centers specializing in earth and mineral sciences on the African continent. The center was established in 1977 under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, before expanding its membership to include more African countries and being renamed in 2015.
The center provides high-quality services including advanced laboratory analyses, geological research, technical consultations, capacity building and training, geological mapping, applications of geographic information systems and remote sensing, ore processing, studies of industrial minerals and gemstones, and environmental monitoring related to mining activities.
The center currently has nine African member states: Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Uganda, Angola, Comoros, Kenya, and South Sudan.
It is to be recalled that this selection underscores the growing role of the General Authority for Geological Research and the Ministry of Minerals in promoting regional cooperation, exchanging expertise, and supporting initiatives aimed at developing the African mining sector, thereby contributing to sustainable economic development and the optimal investment of the continent’s mineral resources.
