Sudan Condemns Militia Attack on Heglig Oilfields, Says Violations Have Extended to Neighbors

Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon

The Sudanese government on Saturday denounced the attack carried out by the Rapid Support Forces militia on the Heglig oilfields, which resulted in the death and injury of several civilian workers in the area. The government said it may be forced to suspend operations at the oilfields to protect the safety of workers.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the militia has continued this barbaric behavior since the start of the rebellion in April 2023, targeting infrastructure and vital facilities that provide essential services to Sudanese citizens. It added that these attacks have now gone beyond damaging Sudan’s national interests to targeting the interests of the Republic of South Sudan and other foreign companies that use Heglig for South Sudan’s oil exports.

The ministry stressed that the Sudanese government has consistently highlighted these violations by the militia, but the international community has remained passive, which has emboldened the militia to escalate its attacks beyond Sudan into neighboring countries—posing a security threat to the entire region.

The statement concluded: “For security reasons, the Government of Sudan may be compelled to take the necessary measures to halt operations at the oilfield and evacuate workers in the area in order to protect their lives.”
