Sudan Calls on UN to Help Address Worsening Drug Problem

Vienna – Sudanhorizon
Sudan’s Ambassador to Vienna, Magdi Ahmed Mufaddal, has called on the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to develop an emergency response program for Sudan tailored to the current situation in the country. He also requested urgent logistical support to compensate for the extensive damage inflicted on the country’s regulatory infrastructure as a result of the systematic destruction of state institutions by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.

Ambassador Mufaddal, Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna, delivered Sudan’s statement on Monday at the 69th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, held in Vienna from March 9-13, 2026. In the statement, he affirmed Sudan’s full commitment to cooperating with regional and international partners to combat the global drug problem.
The delegate noted that the Rapid Support Forces’ ongoing rebellion for nearly three years has complicated anti-drug efforts through the looting and destruction of specialized institutions, including the General Directorate for Drug Control and the National Council for Medicines and Poisons, as well as the destruction of laboratories and rehabilitation centers. He warned of the dangers of the proliferation of advanced weapons in the hands of the militia and their potential access to drug trafficking networks, as well as the growing link between the rebellion and organized crime.
Ambassador Magdi explained that despite these exceptional circumstances, Sudanese security forces have managed to make significant seizures of tramadol, cocaine, and Afghan hashish. They also successfully dismantled a Captagon manufacturing facility in the city of Al-Jili after its liberation from the rebellion.
