Sudan Bids Farewell to Artist Abdel Gader Salem in a Solemn Procession

Large crowds of Sudanese citizens today, Tuesday, escorted artist Dr. Abdel Gader Salem to his final resting place at Hamad Al-Nil Cemetery in Omdurman, after he passed away this morning, bringing to an end a rich national, artistic, academic, trade-union, and social journey marked by dedication and cultural enrichment.

Leading the mourners were a number of artists, alongside the Deputy Chief Justice, Justice Munir Mohamed Al-Hassan, Khartoum State Governor Ahmed Osman Hamza, members of the state government, and prominent figures from society including poets, media professionals, university professors, leaders of the armed forces, police and general intelligence services, as well as figures from Sufi orders.

Official and popular institutions alike hastened to offer condolences to the Sudanese nation, his family, those who knew his merit, and his admirers at home and abroad.

The Transitional Sovereignty Council extended its condolences to the Sudanese people and the artistic community in a press statement, describing him as one of the pioneers of Sudanese song who left behind a cultural and artistic legacy that will serve as guidance and inspiration for future generations.

He was also mourned by Prime Minister Kamil Idris, the Federal Ministry of Culture and Information, the Union of Musical Professions, the Khartoum State Government, as well as leaders of civil society and cultural and artistic organizations.

Professors and students of the College of Music and Drama observed a minute of silence before the launch of graduation project performances for final-year drama students this morning.

Abdel Gader Salem is considered a great loss to the Sudanese people, as an artist known for his deep love of the homeland. He remained steadfast in his home in Omdurman throughout the days of the war, and his residence served as a gathering place for Sudanese society and the artistic community. He held numerous trade-union and academic positions, including Chairman of the Council of Musical and Theatrical Professions, Head of the Artists’ Syndicate, and a member of the Research Council at the College of Music and Drama.
