Sudan Ambassador Brief Pan-African Parliament on Causes of War in Sudan

Sudan’s Ambassador to South Africa, Osman Abu Fatima, participated in a joint hearing between the Committees on Cooperation, International Relations and Conflict Resolution and the Committee on Justice and Human Rights, held at the African Parliament headquarters in Midrand ,Tuesday.
In his address before the session Abu Fatima outlining the developments of the crisis in Sudan and the government’s vision for achieving peace and stability.
He emphasized that the war in Sudan constitutes an armed rebellion targeting the state and its institutions, noting that the Rapid Support Forces’ refusal to implement security arrangements and integrate into the army was a primary cause of the conflict.
The ambassador also discussed the humanitarian repercussions of the war and the government’s efforts to deliver aid, warning of the continued siege of El Obeid city, North Kordufan state.
He explained that achieving peace in Sudan requires addressing external interventions that contribute to prolonging the war, reiterating Sudan’s position regarding the military, financial, and logistical support received by the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia and stressing the need to halt the flow of weapons, funding, and mercenaries.
Abu Fatima reviewed the grave violations committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia against civilians and the developments related to international accountability efforts. He also commended the African Union’s initiatives, particularly the African Roadmap, and called for a Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned political process.
The Sudanese ambassador urged the Pan-African Parliament to support Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, condemn violations of international humanitarian law, strengthen African cooperation in combating arms trafficking and terrorism, and mobilize support for the recovery and reconstruction phase, thereby contributing to achieving lasting peace and stability in Sudan.
