Sovereign Council: Call for Implementing Legislation for Protecting Women’s Rights

Member of the Sovereign Council, Salma Abdel Jabbar Al-Mubarak has reviewed the performance of the Constitutional Court and its revived role, which had been eclipsed for over four years.
She further emphasized the need to establish the rule of law, upholding the authority of the Sudanese state, and protecting citizens’ rights and freedoms in accordance with national laws and legislation.
In a meeting today in Port Sudan with the President of the Constitutional Court, Wahbi Mohamed Maktar, she stressed the need for joint action and coordination with other courts regarding women’s and children’s rights, and the implementation of laws and legislation in accordance with the Constitution.
She pointed out to the necessity for the Constitutional Court to go beyond its traditional role and to guide the authorities to address any gaps in legislation and to review all legislation concerning women and children before its enactment.
For his part, the President of the Constitutional Court stated in a press statement that the meeting discussed the performance of the Constitutional Court and its role in establishing the rule of law in Sudan. He explained that the meeting also discussed the functions and powers of the Constitutional Court, which include safeguarding the rights and freedoms of citizens and residents, without interfering in the work of other state authorities.
The court’s role is to monitor these authorities within the powers stipulated in the Constitutional Court Law, as well as to review legislation issued by the legislative body and ensure its constitutionality.
Wahbi added that the Sovereign Council member emphasized the need to monitor laws and legislation concerning women and children and to implement and enforce all constitutional provisions.
