Sources: Burundian President to Meet with Dialogue Preparatory Committee on Tuesday;
Cairo – Sudanhorizon – Sabah Mousa
The current Chairperson of the African Union, Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, is set to receive the Sudanese “Dialogue Preparation Committee” this coming Tuesday. This meeting is part of his efforts to engage with various Sudanese factions and proponents of various initiatives regarding an intra-Sudanese dialogue.
Sources close to the Sudanese dialogue process revealed on Sunday that, also in November, the Burundian President will also meet in Bujumbura with the “Quintet”—a mechanism comprising the African Union, the United Nations, the League of Arab States, the European Union, and IGAD.
These meetings will also include various Sudanese political forces participating in the dialogue, most notably the Democratic Bloc and the “Sumoud” (Resilience) Alliance.
The sources indicated that the Burundian President will request that the Quintet provide an assessment of the points of agreement and disagreement among the various Sudanese factions—as observed during previous dialogue sessions—as well as outline the proposed agenda, the participating parties, the suggested venue, and the general visions presented. This is intended to pave the way for future steps regarding the Sudanese dialogue under the auspices of the African Union.
Furthermore, the sources noted that there is growing discontent among several Sudanese factions regarding a condition set by the “Sumoud” Alliance, which has urged the Quintet to limit the dialogue exclusively to the “Sumoud” Alliance, the “Founding Entity” (Kayan Ta’sis), and the Democratic Bloc—thereby excluding other national forces from participating in the process.
In a related development, the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs—in coordination with the organization Promediation—is arranging a new round of meetings with several Sudanese political factions, most notably the Democratic Bloc and the Sumoud (Resilience) Alliance.
These meetings are scheduled to take place in Switzerland between November 25 and 28, as part of efforts to foster consensus among various Sudanese groups, amid ongoing disagreements regarding the mechanisms and intended outcomes of the dialogue process.
Sources have not ruled out the possibility that these meetings may be limited to the Sumoud Alliance, the “Founding Entity” (Kayan Ta’sis), and members of the Democratic Bloc. It is noted that some Sudanese factions refuse to engage with Promediation, alleging that the organization seeks to dismantle Sudan. Furthermore, the Sudanese government has also rejected the prospect of conducting dialogue through workshops organized by the group.
