Removal of Dead Bodies in Khartoum Almost Complete
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon – Maryam
The Head of the Forensic Medicine Authority, Dr. Hisham Zain Al-Abideen, said on Friday that operations to collect unidentified bodies from the capital, Khartoum, are nearing completion.
He confirmed to Sudanhorizon news website that all bodies found inside homes and looted premises have been collected and buried.
The Director of the Forensic Medicine Authority declined to disclose the number of bodies collected.
He pointed out that, in coordination with the relevant authorities, the agency is currently carrying out the final stages of collecting bodies found in open areas of some residential neighborhoods that were used by the militia as burial sites.
Zain Al-Abideen confirmed that all of Khartoum has become fit for habitation, reassuring citizens who were displaced from their homes and those who are concerned that the situation is safe and that they can return.
It is worth noting that Khartoum State, in coordination with relevant judicial authorities—foremost among them the Forensic Medicine Authority—launched a campaign last July to collect bodies across the state.
In a previous statement to Sudanhorizon, the Head of the Forensic Medicine Authority said that all bodies that were lying on roads had been collected and buried in designated and known cemeteries, and that work is ongoing to count the number of victims and mass graves that were discovered and covered following the liberation of Khartoum State. He explained that those collected were found in areas previously under the control of the Rapid Support Forces, some of whom were civilian citizens, while others were prisoners held by the militia who were executed. He added that the militia’s control over forensic laboratories in Khartoum State and their subsequent destruction prevented the identification of the victims through genetic testing, noting that examinations of the bodies may be carried out in the future after the laboratories are rehabilitated.
