Refugee File on the Table at Sairin’s Meeting with Central African Republic Officials in Geneva

Sudan’s Minister of Interior, Major General Khalil Pasha Sairin, met with high-ranking officials from the Central African Republic (CAR) in the Swiss capital, Geneva. The Central African delegation included Joziane Bimaka Sui, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, and Michel Nazin, Minister of Security and Commissioner for Refugees Affairs.
During the meeting, the ministers affirmed the solid fraternal ties between the two countries and the deep connections between their peoples. They also highlighted Sudan’s positive role in fostering peace and finding sustainable solutions to the regional refugee crisis in the Central African Republic. Sudan is a signatory to the Yaoundé Declaration and several neighbouring countries of the CAR, which addresses the refugee crisis.
The meeting also explored avenues for joint cooperation in tackling the growing humanitarian challenges arising from the regional refugee crisis, including the return of CAR refugees from Sudan and Sudanese refugees who fled to the CAR due to the conflict caused by the rebel militias. The CAR officials emphasised that their country remains open to Sudanese refugees, with President Faustin Touadera personally prioritising the issue of welcoming them.
Major General Sairin took the opportunity to reaffirm Sudan’s commitment and positive engagement in implementing the Yaoundé Declaration. He emphasized the importance of the technical committee established for this purpose, demonstrating Sudan’s dedication to addressing the refugee crisis.
Both sides stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation in managing their shared border, ensuring the safety of refugees, preventing their exploitation by armed groups, and combating mercenaries that threaten the security and stability of both brotherly nations.
The ministers reiterated their unwavering commitment to maintaining close cooperation in their shared goal of finding sustainable solutions to the refugee crisis. They expressed their hope for future meetings to continue this vital dialogue and coordination.
