Protesting Biased Coverage: British Sky News Intends to Withdraw its Brand License from UAE
Sudanhorizon– Follow-ups
The British newspaper The Telegraph reported on Wednesday that the British satellite broadcaster Sky News has formally notified the UAE-based Sky News Arabia of its intention to withdraw its brand license next year.
Former executives at the UK-based channel told The Telegraph last November that the channel had become a mouthpiece for the UAE rulers. One of them said that the editorial board, which was supposed to monitor coverage, “has no real authority” because the channel is “owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed (the Vice President of the UAE).”
Sky News Arabia sparked international controversy last year with its coverage of the Rapid Support Forces’ takeover of El Fasher, the capital of Darfur. Satellite images documented a massacre in which thousands of civilians were killed, with many shot in the streets, so many that blood and piles of bodies were visible from space.
Last February, a UN fact-finding mission reported that genocide was the “only logical conclusion” drawn from the pattern of rape, murder, and ethnic cleansing. However, Sky News Arabia sent a correspondent to the scene after the city fell; she is the wife of a high-ranking official in the government loyal to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The Telegraph reports that Tasabih Mubarak Khater was seen embracing an RSF commander and claimed in her coverage that there was no evidence of the atrocities documented by satellite imagery or media reports gathered from those who managed to escape
