The news website “Sudanhorizon” has obtained information regarding the revised dates for the anticipated visit of the U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, scheduled near the end of President Joe Biden’s term.
High-level sources confirmed to the website’s reporter that Perriello will visit Port Sudan immediately after the U.S. elections. The sources denied any impact of the upcoming U.S. elections, set for November 5, on the scheduling of the visit. They clarified that the Biden administration would continue to carry out its duties until January 6 of the following year, when the new administration would assume office.
Notably, Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris will face off in the upcoming U.S. presidential election on November 5.
In a tweet on his account, U.S. Special Envoy Tom Perriello stated, “We are monitoring horrifying reports of atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Forces against Sudanese civilians across Al-Jazirah State, including incidents of rape and the killing of children.”
Meanwhile, a high-level source, who preferred to remain anonymous, downplayed the potential for any meaningful outcomes from the visit. The source noted that the visit had been delayed significantly due to the U.S. side’s insistence on conditions previously rejected by the Sudanese government. The source added, “If the visit had taken place sooner, it might have increased the likelihood of success or fostered agreement between the Sudanese government and the U.S. administration on some general principles that could guide all parties toward a negotiated solution leading to the implementation of the Jeddah Declaration.”
The source pointed out that the visit comes after extensive abuses by the rebel militia, with casualties having risen without substantial U.S. action beyond statements. He concluded, “This visit will unlikely yield any meaningful outcome.”
