National Umma Party Official to “Sudanhorizon”: We Endorsed Kamil Idris as Legitimate PM

Cairo – Sudanhorizon – Sabah Musa
Lieutenant General Siddiq Ismail, Deputy Leader of the National Umma Party, confirmed that the party’s statement rejects the legitimacy of the government and that the Prime Minister does not represent the Umma Party.
In an exclusive statement to the Sudanhorizon news website, Ismail said that the party’s presidential body had made a decision to endorse Dr Kamil Idris as Prime Minister. He added, “We only expressed some reservations about the manner of his appointment and called on him to commit to steps for building institutions, to avoid favouritism and cliques, and to be open to the Sudanese people.”
Ismail stressed that this is the Umma Party’s way of handling matters, saying: “We try to fix things wisely, not in the way those who issued that statement are doing.”
The Deputy Leader of the National Umma Party noted that the selection of Kamil Idris garnered strong international support and was widely welcomed by the public within Sudan. He said the people are eager for a democratic civilian transition. He also confirmed that the party had withdrawn the mandate from Fadlallah Burma Nasir as party leader and that the current acting president is Mohamed Abdallah Al-Douma.
Ismail added that Nasir and his group are running the party from Nairobi, whereas the Umma Party and its leadership are based in Sudan and Cairo. “Therefore, any statements issued from abroad do not represent the party, and we do not recognize them,” he said.
It is worth noting that the National Umma Party, under the leadership of Fadlallah Burma Nasir, issued a statement on Wednesday rejecting “the formation of any government that lacks consensual legitimacy or popular mandate.” The statement also said that appointing Kamil Idris as Prime Minister represents “a continuation of the October 25 coup, which overthrew the civilian transitional government.”
