MOF: E-Payments to Combat Corruption, Enhance Transparency and Increase Revenues

The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Jibril Ibrahim, said that the goal of the Sudanese government from launching the digital transformation and electronic payment process is to fight corruption, increase revenues and achieve transparency.

Jibril added in the opening session of a workshop on electronic payment and the step towards digital transformation and financial inclusion organized by the (Shumous Media) Center in partnership with the Sudan News Agency(SUNA) this evening, on Thursday, in Port Sudan: “We are very backward in the electronic payment process, and we must take it step by step towards digital transformation and electronic payment, because electronic payment is a common experience in the whole world with the exception of some countries, and we do not need the phenomenon of citizens queueing in banks.”

The Minister of Finance pointed out the importance of the electronic payment process in the rapid growth of deposits in banks.

He added, “We have a great shortage of financial deposits to finance projects, but through digital transformation we can finance very important projects.”

He stressed that the government seeks to completely shift to the electronic system in all transactions.

For his part, the Governor of the Bank of Sudan, Barai Al-Siddiq, said that the workshop comes at an important and pivotal time when the country is witnessing many developments on the economic front.

For his part, the official spokesman for the Sudanese government, Minister of Culture and Information, Khaled Ali Al-Aiser, said: “We realize the importance of the role in raising awareness of the importance of the electronic payment process.”

He stressed that the currency replacement project is one of the largest successful operations despite the challenges in the country.

He pointed out that the workshop constitutes a qualitative addition within the framework of the government’s efforts to enhance the electronic payment process.

He also praised the role of the Central Bank of Sudan in the process of replacing the currency after printing new papers despite the challenges.

Ms. Samia Sayed, General Manager of Shams Media Center, said that holding the workshop comes within the role of media professionals in providing what benefits Sudan in the next stage.

The workshop presented papers on unifying the electronic payment platform by banking expert Asjad Yahya, a paper on technology redefining the economy, and a paper on the role of infrastructure in supporting financial inclusion.

Sovereignty Council member Lieutenant General Ibrahim Jaber is scheduled to receive the workshop’s recommendations at the closing session
