Minawi Urges ICRC to Inspect Prisons and Visit Detainees Held by Militias
Geneva – Sudanhorizon
The Governor of Darfur region, Minni Arko Minawi, has urged the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to intensify its efforts to access prisons and all detainees held by the “rebel militias,” as well as those forcibly disappeared. He also called on the ICRC to increase its efforts to provide medical support to war wounded.
Minawi held a meeting in Geneva on Monday with the President of the ICRC, Mirjana Spoljarić, during which they discussed the militias’ violations against civilians and the resulting humanitarian situation, particularly in Darfur. They also explored ways to strengthen joint cooperation in responding to the crisis.
The Governor of Darfur provided a comprehensive briefing on the humanitarian situation, noting that Sudan is facing the world’s largest displacement crisis due to the systematic forced displacement carried out by the militias for demographic change and the replacement of the original inhabitants, especially in Darfur.
Minawi highlighted the dire situation in El Fasher, describing it as extremely dangerous following the militia’s takeover, which has prevented the delivery of humanitarian aid, led to severe shortages of food, medicine, and water, and caused a complete collapse of health services.
For her part, Mirjana Spoljarić affirmed the ICRC’s continued efforts to enhance humanitarian access and deliver aid despite the challenges on the ground, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring respect for international humanitarian law.
The Governor of Darfur expressed his appreciation for the ICRC’s humanitarian role under the complex circumstances, and both sides stressed the importance of continued coordination and cooperation to improve the humanitarian response in Sudan, particularly in Darfur region.
